New Delhi, Sep 28 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the 126th episode of 'Mann Ki Baat' on Sunday, encouraged citizens to embrace 'Swadeshi' this Gandhi Jayanti and take pride in supporting local products.
"October 2 marks Gandhi Jayanti. Gandhiji consistently advocated for the Swadeshi movement, with Khadi being a key element. Sadly, after Independence, Khadi's allure diminished, but over the past 11 years, interest in Khadi has notably risen. Recent years have witnessed a remarkable increase in Khadi sales," said PM Modi.
"I urge everyone to purchase at least one Khadi product on October 2. Let’s celebrate these items as Swadeshi and share our pride on social media using the hashtag 'Vocal for Local'," he added.
"In addition to Khadi, our handloom and handicraft sectors are experiencing significant advancements," the Prime Minister noted, highlighting examples from India that demonstrate how the fusion of tradition and innovation can yield incredible outcomes.
One such instance is Yaazh Naturals in Tamil Nadu, where Ashok Jagdishan and Prem Selvaraj transitioned from corporate careers to launch a new venture. They create yoga mats from grass and banana fibers, use herbal dyes for fabrics, and have provided training and employment to 200 families.
PM Modi also praised Ashish Satyavrat Sahu from Jharkhand, who has elevated tribal weaving and garments to an international audience through the Johargram brand.
"His endeavors have made Jharkhand’s cultural heritage known globally," he mentioned.
Additionally, Sweety Kumari from Madhubani district, Bihar, has established Sankalp Creations, transforming Mithila paintings into a livelihood for women. Today, over 500 rural women are joining her journey towards self-sufficiency. These success stories illustrate that our traditions are rich with opportunities for income. With a strong commitment, success is within reach," he concluded.
