Phnom Penh, Sep 28 (NationPress) Cambodia has witnessed notable advancements in women's education, economic empowerment, health, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention, and leadership over the last three decades, according to Minister of Women's Affairs Ing Kantha Phavi.

The minister emphasized that the country has made significant progress in promoting gender equality, supported by strong political commitment from top leadership, a comprehensive government approach, and collaborative partnerships with civil society, the private sector, and development allies.

"Women and their families have reaped the benefits of enduring peace, poverty alleviation, decent employment, and robust economic growth," Phavi stated in an interview with Xinhua news agency.

She noted that gender equality is central to all four phases of the government's Rectangular Strategy, acknowledging that women are essential to Cambodia's economy and society.

The current government has maintained this commitment through the Pentagonal Strategy, which focuses on ongoing investment in gender equality and the development of a highly civilized, ethical, equitable, and inclusive society where women are pivotal.

The minister also highlighted remarkable achievements in women's development within the kingdom.

In terms of education, Cambodia is nearing gender parity at both primary and secondary levels, with ongoing improvements in higher education and postgraduate programs.

"Female students now constitute 52.51 percent of all tertiary-level students nationwide," she remarked. "At the doctoral level, women account for 10.32 percent of total PhD candidates (145 out of 1,404)."

Regarding economic empowerment, Phavi stated that women serve a crucial role as breadwinners.

"Cambodia boasts one of the highest female workforce participation rates in ASEAN, bolstered by economic growth and supportive ecosystems for decent jobs, entrepreneurship, and care services (social protection programs and childcare facilities)," she added.

In health, the minister indicated that maternal mortality has decreased from 437 in 2000 to 154 per 100,000 live births in 2022, thanks to improved access to maternal health and reproductive services.

In GBV prevention, she noted that the prevalence of domestic violence fell from 29 percent in 2014 to 21 percent in 2021, driven by enhanced multi-sectoral responses and victim-focused services at national and sub-national levels.

In leadership, Phavi remarked that women represent 42 percent of civil servants and hold 27 percent of decision-making positions.

"Women are not merely beneficiaries; they are catalysts for change, innovation, and resilience," she concluded.
