New Delhi, May 20 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Tuesday regarding the death of the esteemed nuclear scientist Dr. MR Srinivasan.

Dr. Srinivasan passed away in Udhagamandalam, Tamil Nadu, at the age of 95.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media platform X, PM Modi referred to Srinivasan as a “pioneer of India's nuclear energy initiative”.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. MR Srinivasan, a pioneer of India's nuclear energy initiative. His significant contributions to developing essential nuclear infrastructure have been crucial for our energy independence,” the post conveyed.

“He is fondly remembered for his remarkable leadership at the Atomic Energy Commission. India will forever be indebted to him for propelling scientific advancements and guiding numerous young scientists. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Om Shanti, ” it further stated.

Dr. Srinivasan played a vital role in shaping India's civil nuclear energy program. His extensive career in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) began in September 1955 and lasted over five decades.

Under his supervision, a notable expansion occurred, with 18 nuclear power units initiated — seven were operational, seven were under construction, and four were in the planning stages.

Earlier, PM Modi also expressed condolences for the late astrophysicist Dr. Jayant Narlikar, who passed away at 87 in Pune on Tuesday. PM Modi described his death as “a tremendous loss to the scientific community”.

“He was a beacon of knowledge, particularly in astrophysics. His groundbreaking works, especially critical theoretical frameworks, will be cherished by future researchers,” PM Modi shared on X.

Narlikar “was an influential figure, establishing centers of learning and innovation for aspiring minds. His writings have significantly contributed to making science accessible to the general public. My condolences to his family and friends during this period of mourning. Om Shanti, ” he added.

The distinguished astronomer and science author Narlikar was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honor, at just 26. He later received the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in 2004.
