Prayagraj, March 25 (NationPress) Santosh Mehta, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj, never envisioned possessing a permanent residence. However, due to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), her aspiration has transformed into a reality.
This initiative is serving as a vital support for numerous impoverished families, allowing them to secure their own homes and aiding the battle against poverty within the nation.
IANS conversed with the delighted beneficiary from Prayagraj.
Mehta, the PMAY beneficiary, expressed: "We previously resided in rental accommodations, moving from one place to another. There was a time we even stayed at our daughter's residence. Today, thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we possess our own home and a secure roof overhead. At my age, I never anticipated this. With Modi Ji's kindness, we now have a stable place to call home. I am immensely thankful for his initiatives, and I also extend my gratitude to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for his assistance."
The PMAY, initiated on June 25, 2015, is a flagship program aimed at achieving housing for all in urban locales. It provides central support to states and Union Territories for constructing homes for eligible families, targeting the establishment of 1.12 crore houses.
While the minimum area for a house under PMAY is determined to be 30 square meters, states are permitted to adapt this based on local necessities.
Recently, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) sanctioned the construction of over 3.53 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0). This decision was made during the inaugural meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), led by MoHUA Secretary Srinivas Katikithala.
According to the ministry, a total of 3,52,915 houses have received approval under the Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) and Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) segments. These residences will be developed across ten states and Union Territories - Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh.
The scheme prioritizes women’s empowerment, with over 2.67 lakh houses granted specifically for female beneficiaries, including single women and widows. Moreover, 90 houses have been designated for transgender individuals. The approved list also includes 80,850 houses for Scheduled Caste beneficiaries, 15,928 for Scheduled Tribes, and 2,12,603 for Other Backward Classes, striving to foster inclusivity among disadvantaged communities.
