PMSBY pays ₹2 lakh to Neemuch family after breadwinner's accidental death
The Centre's Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) is proving to be a vital financial safety net for low-income families in Madhya Pradesh's Neemuch district, with beneficiaries receiving accident insurance payouts of up to ₹2 lakh at an annual premium of just ₹20. A case from Javi village has put a human face on the scheme's reach, after a family lost its sole breadwinner to an accidental death in April 2025.
What PMSBY Offers
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9 May 2015, PMSBY provides affordable accidental insurance to individuals aged 18 to 70 years. The scheme offers ₹2 lakh in compensation for accidental death or permanent total disability, and ₹1 lakh for partial permanent disability. Enrolment requires only an active savings account with a bank or post office, making it accessible to a wide cross-section of the population, according to officials.
The Javi Village Case
Kanhaiyalal Patidar, a resident of Javi village in Neemuch district, had enrolled in PMSBY through the State Bank of India (SBI) branch in his village. In April 2025, he died accidentally after falling into a tank while at work. He was the sole earning member of his family, survived by his wife and two daughters. Following his death, a cheque of ₹2 lakh was handed over to his nominee — his elder daughter, Preeti Patidar.
Family Speaks on the Relief Received
Preeti Patidar said the family was plunged into severe financial difficulty after her father's sudden death.
