Bhubaneswar, March 12 (NationPress) The Opposition Congress in Odisha announced a stringent three-line whip for its party MLAs on Thursday, mandating their presence in Bhubaneswar during the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
According to an official statement from the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Chief Whip, C.S. Raazen Ekka, legislators are required to stay in the state capital from March 13 to 16 and not leave the headquarters.
The voting for the Rajya Sabha elections is set for March 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Odisha Assembly.
The CLP Chief Whip emphasized the necessity of full attendance, indicating the party's resolve to strengthen its position during this significant electoral event.
This directive is enforced with a three-line whip, making it obligatory for all Congress MLAs to comply without any exceptions.
"All Congress Legislature Party MLAs are directed to remain in Bhubaneswar from March 13 to 16 without fail. This will be regarded as a Three-Line Whip, and strict adherence is expected," the CLP Chief Whip stated.
In the midst of escalating political tensions, the Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) also issued a three-line whip on Wednesday, instructing its MLAs to be present in Bhubaneswar during the same period in light of the Rajya Sabha elections.
"All MLAs of the Biju Janata Dal in the Odisha Assembly must be informed that the voting for the Rajya Sabha Elections 2026 will occur on March 16, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Odisha Assembly. All BJD MLAs are instructed to stay in Bhubaneswar from March 13 to March 16 without exception," noted the order from BJD Chief Whip Pramila Mallik.
She reiterated that this order should be treated as a three-line whip, necessitating strict compliance.
Amid speculations of horse-trading, political analysts are closely monitoring the potential for cross-voting and shifts in allegiance ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections.
On Wednesday, BJD President and Opposition Leader Naveen Patnaik launched a fierce critique of the state government, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in horse-trading as the Rajya Sabha elections approach.
