Mumbai, July 10 (NationPress) A significant political uproar has surfaced in Maharashtra following the emergence of a video depicting Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad physically assaulting a canteen worker at the state-operated Akashwani MLA Guest House in Mumbai.
The footage reveals Gaikwad slapping and striking the staff member over claims of being served spoiled dal, igniting widespread outcry and condemnation.
This altercation unfolded during the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Assembly, amplifying the political ramifications.
In the clip, Gaikwad, who serves as the representative for Buldhana, is observed exhibiting a violent reaction regarding what he alleged to be rotten and foul-smelling food.
Despite facing significant backlash, Gaikwad showed no remorse, defending his conduct based on the quality of the food served.
In a strong response, Maharashtra Samajwadi Party President Abu Asim Azmi criticized the incident sharply.
Azmi stated, “Where is the law? In this country, one person assaults another and there are no repercussions. The law mandates strict action against those accountable. Yet, they are in power and believe they can act without consequence.”
In the meantime, Shiv Sena leader and minister Uday Samant attempted to provide a measured defense while denouncing the violence.
“We do not endorse such actions, but we must also consider the other side. He voiced his concerns about the poor quality of food in the canteen. However, resorting to violence is unacceptable. Both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister have condemned such acts. While we do not support his behavior, the food provided was substandard,” Samant articulated.
As the video gained traction on social media, the Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) took immediate action. On Wednesday, the FDA suspended the license of Ajanta Caterers, the operator of the canteen at the Akashwani MLA hostel, citing breaches of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, following an inspection.
Gaikwad is not unfamiliar with controversy. Last year, he incited outrage by offering a reward of Rs 11 lakh for anyone who would cut off the tongue of Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, amidst a debate over comments made by the Congress leader regarding the reservation system.
He also faced criticism after a video emerged last year showing a police officer cleaning his car.
Gaikwad later claimed the officer volunteered to wash the vehicle after he vomited inside it. Furthermore, in February last year, he bragged about having hunted a tiger in 1987 and wearing its tooth around his neck, leading to charges under the Wildlife Protection Act.
