Kolkata, Sep 24 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, commemorated the death anniversary of the independence martyr Pritilata Waddedar on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the foundation of unity, harmony, and the synthesis of all religions amid the present challenges facing the nation.
She remarked that the nation achieved its independence through significant struggles.
"The illustrious freedom fighters envisioned a nation founded on unity, harmony, and the synthesis of all religions; it is our solemn duty to uphold that legacy," stated the Chief Minister in a social media post.
During various occasions, from public addresses to inaugurating Durga Puja pandals, the Chief Minister frequently addresses two key topics: the significance of communal harmony and the reported discrimination against Bengali-speaking individuals in states governed by the BJP.
In her tribute to Waddedar, a prominent figure in the fight against British colonial rule, she highlighted Bengal's rich history of revolutionary women, including Matangini Hazra, Kalpana Dutta, Veena Das, and Suniti Chowdhury.
"I firmly believe that without Bengal, the independence movement would not have succeeded. Bengal is the backbone of this movement," the Chief Minister asserted.
In 1932, Waddedar led a group of armed revolutionaries in an attack on the Pahartali European Club in Chittagong, now part of Bangladesh, where a sign stated, "Dogs and Indians not allowed".
During a fierce gun battle with colonial guards, she was shot in the leg, which hindered her escape. Rather than surrender, she chose to take cyanide, thus becoming a martyr.
