Sabarimala, Oct 18 (NationPress) On October 22 (Wednesday), President Droupadi Murmu will make history as only the second individual in India’s highest office to visit the renowned Sabarimala temple in Kerala, according to P.S. Prasanth, the president of the Travancore Devasom Board.
Prasanth noted that the President will arrive in the state capital on October 21, and the following day, she will take a helicopter to Nilackal.
“From Nilackal, she will travel by road to the foothills of the temple town at Pamba. There, she will perform the rituals customary for all Ayyappa devotees at the Ganapathy temple in Pamba before ascending to the temple,” Prasanth explained.
He did not confirm whether the President would proceed to the temple by road or via jeep.
“Strict protocols are in place, managed by the NSG, but she will adhere to all temple rituals, which are also being coordinated by the NSG,” added Prasanth.
“By 5 p.m., the President is expected to conclude her darshan and return. The temple will welcome devotees on October 21 and 22,” Prasanth mentioned.
Interestingly, Murmu’s visit was initially scheduled for May this year but was canceled due to the Operation Sindhoor activity.
The revered Sabarimala temple is perched in the Western Ghats at an elevation of 3,000 feet above sea level and requires a four-kilometre trek uphill from Pamba, which is approximately 100 km from the Kerala capital.
It’s important to note that girls and women aged between 10 and 50 are prohibited from entering the hilltop shrine.
The temple, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, is only accessible on foot from the Pamba River.
Moreover, Murmu’s visit coincides with an investigation by a Kerala High Court-appointed SIT into the alleged theft of gold plates covering the entry to the sanctum sanctorum of this revered temple.
So far, one individual has been arrested, and nine others have been implicated in the two FIRs filed by the SIT.
