Raipur/Sarguja, Nov 20 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu has stressed that the upliftment of women is crucial for fostering a healthy, educated, and progressive society in India. "When women advance, society naturally progresses," she asserted, encouraging tribal women to assume leadership roles in education, health, and community development.
She spoke to a large audience in Sarguja, Chhattisgarh, during the inauguration of the three-day state-level Janjatiya Gaurav Divas (tribal pride day) celebrations, commemorating the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda with a strong message of women's empowerment and the importance of preserving tribal identity.
While addressing the crowd at the Science College ground, President Murmu, who is a proud member of the Santhal tribal community, became emotional as she reflected on her heritage.
“I have always embraced my culture and I continue to do so every single day,” she expressed, eliciting a rousing applause from thousands of tribal members who had gathered from various parts of the state.
She particularly highlighted the conservation of “Jan, Jungle aur Jameen (people, forests, and land)” – the three essential elements that define tribal life.
Emphasizing the profound connection tribal communities have with nature, she urged for the protection of forests and traditional lands while ensuring that development reaches even the most remote villages without disrupting ecological balance.
During her two-day visit to Raipur, she also launched the Chief Minister’s Tribal Village Akhra Vikas Yojana, a flagship initiative designed to develop traditional Akhra (community cultural spaces) in tribal villages, equipped with modern facilities for youth skill development, sports, and cultural activities.
She remarked that the contributions of tribal communities represent a glorious chapter in India’s history, affirming that the development of tribal populations is a top priority for the Government of India. Various national-level programs have been established and executed for the welfare of tribal communities.
Numerous prominent tribal figures were honored at the event for their significant contributions in diverse fields.
Governor Ramen Deka presided over the proceedings, with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, and other dignitaries in attendance.
Chief Minister Sai described the President’s visit as a “moment of immense pride” for Chhattisgarh, particularly since she is the first tribal woman to occupy the nation’s highest constitutional office.
Cultural groups from Gond, Baiga, Maria, and other tribes showcased lively performances, celebrating Chhattisgarh’s rich indigenous heritage.
The three-day festivities will include exhibitions on tribal freedom fighters, traditional crafts, medicinal plants, and discussions on welfare schemes. President Murmu’s address reinforced the national commitment to tribal upliftment under the framework of “Viksit Bharat” while safeguarding the unique identity and traditions of Janjatiya communities.
