Imphal, Feb 13 (NationPress) President's Rule has been enacted in Manipur on Thursday under Article 356 of the Constitution, just five days after the state’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, resigned from his position following directives from central BJP leaders.

A notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs issued on Thursday indicated that the President had received a report from the Governor of Manipur. After reviewing the report and other received information, she concluded that a scenario had developed where the state government could not function as per the provisions of the Constitution.

“Thus, in exercising the powers granted by Article 356 of the Constitution and all other powers available to me, I hereby declare that I (a) assume all functions of the Government of the State of Manipur and all powers that can be exercised by the Governor of that State. Additionally, I announce that the powers of the Legislature of the said state will be exercised by or under the authority of Parliament, along with the necessary provisions I find essential or desirable to implement this Proclamation,” the notification states.

In the meantime, following Biren Singh's resignation, intense discussions are underway to appoint a new leader for the ruling BJP legislative party who will guide the new administration.

The BJP's northeast in-charge, Sambit Patra, conducted a series of meetings with ministers, MLAs, and BJP leaders, along with allies, to gather their opinions on selecting the new legislative party leader.

For the past two years, Manipur has experienced ethnic violence between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities, severely impacting the state and ultimately leading to Biren Singh's resignation.

Biren Singh's resignation coincides with active political developments, as the Opposition Congress had previously announced plans to introduce a no-confidence motion against the BJP government in the Assembly session scheduled to commence on Monday. However, the Governor rendered the session 'null and void' shortly after Biren Singh's resignation.
