New Delhi, May 20 (NationPress) The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, stated on Tuesday that he had engaging discussions with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick regarding the advancement of the first tranche of the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
Both nations are working diligently to finalize this initial phase of the BTA, aiming to reduce tariffs ahead of the stipulated deadline of fall 2025, as the terms of the agreement have already been established.
“We had productive discussions with Secretary @Howard Lutnick to speed up the first tranche of the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement,” Goyal shared on the X social media platform.
Previously, Goyal mentioned that “very good negotiations” are currently taking place with the United States.
India presents a strong case to the US for a bilateral trade deal, particularly given its growth potential and demographic advantages.
“Considering the growth India is likely to experience in the next 25-30 years, with a large and aspirational young population that will increase demand for goods and services, we believe India stands as a strong candidate for a favorable agreement with the US,” Goyal informed reporters.
If a consensus is reached on tariff reductions, it would significantly boost trade between the US and India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Trump have ambitious goals, targeting $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, as highlighted in a joint statement during the recent visit of the Indian PM to Washington, DC.
Trump claimed last week that India proposed to eliminate all tariffs on American products but noted that he was not in a hurry to finalize the trade agreement, despite the apparent breakthrough.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also remarked last week that the ongoing trade negotiations are intricate.
“The trade discussions between India and the US have been ongoing. These negotiations are complex. Nothing is settled until everything is agreed upon. Any trade agreement must be mutually beneficial and suitable for both nations. That is our expectation from the trade deal. Until then, any judgment would be premature,” EAM Jaishankar stated while addressing reporters.
