Mumbai, June 17 (NationPress) In a fierce critique, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena has condemned the Mahayuti government for the tragic deaths of four tourists and injuries to 51 others resulting from the Pune bridge collapse. The party asserts that the negligence in addressing the bridge's poor condition represents a crime of culpable homicide, revealing that Maharashtra is under the governance of individuals with cruel hearts.
The Thackeray faction, through their publication 'Saamana', claims that the chief minister's gestures of condolences, the announcement of compensation for the bereaved families, and the initiation of an inquiry are mere pretenses, accusing Mahayuti leaders of shedding crocodile tears.
“State Minister for Disaster Management, Girish Mahajan, appears to be anticipating such disasters. Following an incident, he promptly offers Rs 5 lakh to the victims' families, equating the value of lives lost due to government negligence at this sum. Why are lives being lost? Who will address these pressing concerns?” questioned the Thackeray camp.
The editorial highlights the aged condition of the bridge over the Indrayani River, noting that although Rs 8 crore was allocated for its renovation, those funds remained unutilized. “The money has been diverted to politically advantageous projects, leaving the state’s finances in disarray. Consequently, the Indrayani River bridge was left unrepaired, leading to this tragedy, which amounts to culpable homicide,” it stated.
Further, it criticized Ajit Pawar, the Pune district Guardian Minister, and his close associate, Sunil Shelke, the local MLA, for their inaction. “While the MLA has neglected the crumbling bridge in his constituency, he has spent over a hundred crore to secure his election. What role does Ajit Pawar fulfill as the Guardian Minister regarding Pune’s development? Builders profit while residents perish due to the bridge’s collapse,” the editorial argued.
“Maharashtra is plagued by a series of unfortunate events, from fatalities in an Ahmedabad plane crash to drownings in local rivers. Only disheartening news emerges from every direction,” it lamented.
The editorial expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions of the new Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue's platform, highlighting the previous collapse of the original statue as evidence of the Public Works Department's failures. “With funds wasted on this project, where have the crores been allocated? If no investigation takes place, the government’s promises of inquiries are futile,” it stated.
Moreover, it addressed the recent incident involving five passengers who fell from a Mumbai local train, emphasizing the growing insecurity across various transport modes in the state. “Accidents are occurring in quick succession throughout Maharashtra, raising doubts about the credibility of those who claim to be Vikas Purush or champions of the people. The government's negligence is primarily to blame,” concluded Shiv Sena (UBT) in Saamana.
The editorial also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for embarking on a three-nation tour while the state mourns the victims of the Ahmedabad crash. “The families have yet to find closure, yet the Prime Minister's visit came and went without addressing their grief. Just as the Maharashtra government fails to address the bridge over the Indrayani River, it tragically collapses, taking lives in an instant,” the Saamana editorial expressed.
