Pune is on track to become India's foremost Global Capability Centre (GCC) destination, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday, 4 September declaring that the city already hosts more than 130 operational GCC units — a number the state expects to surpass 800 in the years ahead. Fadnavis made the remarks at the inauguration of Magnum Ice Cream Company's Global Business Solutions Centre in Pune, reaffirming the state government's commitment to making Maharashtra the preferred GCC investment destination in India.

Scale of Pune's GCC Footprint

According to Industry Department Principal Secretary Dr P. Anbalagan, GCCs are not merely office spaces — they are, in his words, 'crucial engines driving the nation's economic momentum.' He noted that demand for commercial office space by GCCs in Pune alone reached approximately 6 million square feet over the past 15 months, while 130 new or expanded GCC units were established across Maharashtra in the last 18 months.

The city currently hosts operations from companies representing more than 30 countries across 20 sectors, employing close to 10,000 professionals. The state has set a formal target of hosting 400 GCC companies and over 700 units in the coming period.

What the Magnum Centre Brings

The newly inaugurated Global Business Solutions Centre is expected to generate more than 1,000 direct jobs in addition to boosting indirect employment. The facility will integrate artificial intelligence, automated technologies, logistics, and other advanced solutions to streamline manufacturing, distribution, and customer experience operations for Magnum's global business.

Abhijit Bhattacharya, Chief Financial Officer of Magnum Ice Cream Company, credited the state government's rapid decision-making for bringing the centre to life within a short time frame. He cited Maharashtra's industrial ecosystem, connectivity, and proactive administration as decisive factors in choosing Pune. Bhattacharya also expressed the company's intent to collaborate with the state on sustainable dairy systems and confirmed plans to introduce the global ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's to India.

Infrastructure Push and Hinjawadi Focus

CM Fadnavis indicated that active measures are under way to strengthen physical infrastructure across Pune's industrial corridors, with a special focus on resolving IT infrastructure challenges in Hinjawadi — the city's primary tech township. The Global Business Solutions Centre will operate alongside Magnum's regional headquarters in Mumbai, with Fadnavis describing the dual-city presence as charting a 'new direction' for the company's Maharashtra expansion.

Investment and Policy Advisor to the CM, Kaustubh Dhavse, described the relationship between Magnum Ice Cream Company and the Government of Maharashtra as built on 'trust, reliability, and mutual respect,' adding that the Indian-origin executive leadership steering the company globally brings 'inspiring experience.'

Maharashtra's Broader GCC Ambition

'When the government and the industry collaborate, it creates a robust ecosystem that accelerates investment, job creation, and overall economic growth,' CM Fadnavis said. 'The state government remains committed to providing all necessary support and a conducive climate for businesses investing in Maharashtra.'

This comes amid intensifying competition among Indian cities — including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai — to capture GCC investments as multinationals accelerate their India-centre strategies. Pune's combination of a large engineering talent pool, relatively lower real estate costs compared to Bengaluru, and proximity to Mumbai gives it a structural edge, according to industry observers. With the state's 800-unit target in sight, the pace of new centre announcements is expected to pick up through 2025 and beyond.
