Chandigarh, Sep 18 (NationPress) In a significant move aimed at aiding its citizens, the Punjab government has announced a special Assembly session scheduled from September 26 to 29 to address the needs of flood victims in the region.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that this special session will focus on implementing various amendments to the existing rules pertaining to the devastation caused by the floods.
Furthermore, new legislation regarding compensation for those affected by the floods will be introduced and ratified during this important session.
Mann pointed out the extensive damage inflicted by the floods, revealing that they have submerged over 2,300 villages, impacted more than 2 million people, and devastated crops across an area of five lakh acres.
Sadly, the Chief Minister reported a loss of 56 lives and that around seven lakh individuals have been left homeless.
He also noted that 3,200 government schools suffered damage, 19 colleges were destroyed, 1,400 clinics and hospitals were rendered unusable, 8,500 km of roads were devastated, and 2,500 bridges collapsed.
According to preliminary assessments, the total damage is estimated to be around Rs 13,800 crore, although the real figure may exceed this amount.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the outcomes of this special session will offer significant assistance to citizens affected by the floods. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the people of Punjab during this challenging time. Mann expressed that his government is dedicated to ensuring relief, rehabilitation, and recovery for all those impacted.
Just a day prior, Mann initiated ‘Mission Chardi Kala’—a global fundraising campaign aimed at generating resources for rehabilitation efforts for the 2025 flood victims.
In a video address, the Chief Minister reflected on the recent catastrophic events, stating that the floods not only brought water but also washed away countless dreams. However, he praised the bravery of youth who risked their lives to help others, the generosity of gurdwaras and temples that provided food to those in distress, and the solidarity of the people of Punjab, who united as one family, showcasing their greatest strength.
