Chandigarh, July 30 (NationPress) - BJP's national General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Wednesday called for the cancellation of the land pooling scheme in Punjab and announced that the BJP will initiate a statewide protest to safeguard farmers' interests.
He stated that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is dedicated to defending farmers, asserting that the "state-sponsored conspiracy to exploit farmers' land under the pretext of development for the benefit of real estate developers will not be tolerated."
Chugh, who engaged directly with Punjab’s farmers and presented their grievances to the Governor, remarked, "This is not just a policy; it is a betrayal. Farmers fully understand the true nature of this scheme, which serves as an official mechanism to seize their ancestral lands. Let the Mann government take note: we will not allow them to take away even a single inch of Punjab’s farmland."
Criticizing the Bhagwant Mann (Punjab CM) government for its hypocrisy, Chugh added, "No commitments have been fulfilled. Loans remain unpaid. Youth are still without jobs. The guarantees for Minimum Support Price (MSP) are non-existent. All that thrives under AAP is lawlessness, corruption, and broken promises."
He emphasized that the lands of Punjab’s farmers are "sacred, akin to a mother, and any attempt to forcibly acquire it without their consent amounts to robbery."
"This is not progress; this is coercion disguised as development. We will champion this cause in the streets, in the courts, and among the public. Punjab will not be surrendered to land sharks and political brokers," Chugh declared.
He accused the Mann government of serving as intermediaries for real estate mafias, betraying the farmers who had voted for change but instead received disillusionment.
In response, state Finance Minister Harpal Cheema clarified that the land pooling scheme is designed to benefit farmers and is based on mutual agreement.
"Not a single inch of land will be taken from any farmer without consent. The decision to offer land is entirely at the farmers' discretion," Minister Cheema stated in a media briefing.
This statement follows farmers' protests regarding the scheme. He criticized the Congress, BJP, and the Akali Dal, highlighting that during prior governments over the last decade and a half, numerous illegal colonies were created in Punjab lacking even basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water, and sewerage.
