Kolkata, July 31 (NationPress) The general secretary of Trinamool Congress and party's Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, has called for an important virtual meeting on August 8 to finalize the party’s strategy regarding two significant matters.
The first matter involves organizing large-scale movements against the proposed Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voters’ list in West Bengal initiated by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Trinamool Congress leaders have already labeled the SIR as a scheme by the BJP to eliminate the names of legitimate voters in West Bengal, thereby indirectly implementing the NRC in the state.
The second issue, according to party sources, revolves around devising a plan to extend the party’s upcoming campaigns regarding the harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in BJP-governed states to regions beyond West Bengal.
“The meeting is set to commence at 4 P.M. on Wednesday and will include all elected party MPs, legislators, heads of municipal corporations, municipalities, panchayat bodies, all members of the party’s state committee, leaders of party-affiliated mass organizations, along with district presidents and chairpersons,” a member of the West Bengal Cabinet confirmed.
Notices have already been circulated to those expected to attend the virtual meeting, the Cabinet member added.
While SIR and the harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants will be the focal points of discussion on August 8, there might also be some internal organizational issues addressed during the meeting.
On Wednesday, Abhishek Banerjee accused the central ruling BJP of utilizing the ECI to deprive a significant number of individuals of their voting rights, referring to the SIR initiated by the poll panel as "Silent Invisible Rigging".
He asserted that the BJP is fearful of the people's vote, which is why they are adopting such strategies to skew elections in their favor.
This statement from Banerjee comes amid worries that the Election Commission intends to perform a SIR of the voters’ list in West Bengal prior to the 2026 Assembly polls.
The ECI recently completed a SIR of the voters’ list in neighboring Bihar, where over 60 lakh individuals were categorized as doubtful voters.
