Guwahati, July 17 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, recently took aim at the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, following his remarks regarding 'land theft' during a visit to the state.
CM Sarma informed the press, “Rahul Gandhi suggested that he would like to see me in jail. However, it’s quite possible that he might find himself behind bars first. He is currently out on bail for multiple cases. I think a national leader should refrain from using the kind of language Rahul Gandhi does. It has actually enhanced my political profile.”
He further stated, “My focus has been on improving the lives of the people in Assam. We have created 100,000 jobs. The electorate is aware of our efforts.”
In a post on X, the Chief Minister noted that LoP Gandhi appeared to have concentrated primarily on him throughout his visit.
His post read, “I must express my gratitude — today, he has boosted my political standing to a height I might never have achieved had I remained in the Congress party. He repeatedly mentioned my name in all his addresses.”
CM Sarma remarked that such focus from the Lok Sabha LoP was a source of “great satisfaction.”
Taking a jab at his former party, Sarma, who transitioned from Congress to BJP in 2015, indicated that the recognition he now receives would not have been possible had he stayed with Congress.
“If Rahul Gandhi has decided to criticize me, it's a clear indication that I must be on the right path for the people of Assam,” he asserted.
CM Sarma also addressed LoP Gandhi on X, stating, “I have heard you are out on bail for allegations of massive corruption exceeding Rs 5,000 crore in the National Herald case. You will be remembered as one of India’s most corrupt Congress presidents. Frankly, your comments don’t concern me — because I know, and the nation knows, that you are among the most corrupt leaders in India today.”
His statements came after LoP Gandhi had launched a severe critique of Sarma during his Assam visit on Wednesday, accusing him of corruption and promising that the CM would ultimately face imprisonment.
In a gathering of party supporters in Chaygaon, roughly 40 km from Guwahati, LoP Gandhi claimed that CM Sarma acts like a “raja” yet is “gripped with fear” and will be held accountable for his actions.
Referring to a series of eviction drives across the state, LoP Gandhi mentioned that the youth, farmers, and daily wage earners of Assam desire to see the Chief Minister incarcerated because “they know he is corrupt and steals land from the people 24/7.”
“But observe closely — his face on television reveals fear. He understands that Congress workers will ensure he is jailed.”
