Rahul Mamkootathil Declines Independent Bid for Palakkad Assembly Seat
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Palakkad (Kerala), March 9 (NationPress) - Expelled Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil has confirmed that he will not run as an independent candidate for the Palakkad Assembly seat in the forthcoming Assembly elections in Kerala. This announcement comes amidst growing speculation regarding his political trajectory, particularly as he faces several legal challenges.
When questioned by party supporters about his potential independent candidacy, Rahul acknowledged the encouragement he received but firmly stated that he would only contest if he had the backing of his party. "The party had previously invited me to run. If they ask me again, I will consider it; if they do not, I won’t," he clarified.
After a prolonged absence from public engagements, Rahul recently began visiting the constituency, hinting at a cautious return to political life. During one of his visits to Palakkad, he presented keys to houses built under his leadership to local beneficiaries.
This marked his first visit to the area following his arrest related to a third rape case against him.
On January 11, the Special Investigation Team took Rahul into custody as part of their investigation into this matter.
Rahul’s political journey has been marked by significant highs and lows in a relatively brief period. Prior to the 2024 Palakkad Assembly by-election, he was a prominent figure as the Youth Congress president, often seen as a rising star within the Congress party framework in Kerala.
Despite his non-native status in Palakkad, the party selected him as a candidate for the bypoll, as he originally hails from Pathanamthitta district in Kerala.
He enjoyed overwhelming support from the outset of his campaign. When the polls concluded, Rahul achieved an impressive victory margin of over 18,000 votes—an impressive turnaround from the fewer than 4,000 votes by which Shafi Parambil had defeated 'Metroman' E. Sreedharan in the 2021 Assembly elections.
In a related development, the complainant from the initial rape case has approached the Supreme Court, seeking to annul the anticipatory bail that the Kerala High Court had granted to Rahul. The petition claims that allegations of sexual assault involving nearly ten individuals, including minors, have been filed against him.
The petitioner contends that the anticipatory bail was granted under legally questionable circumstances and should be revoked.
Currently, Rahul is contending with three distinct rape allegations.
