Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Indian Railways recorded a 4 per cent year-on-year rise in freight loading during June 2026, hauling 142.21 million tonnes compared with 136.71 million tonnes in June 2025, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Railways issued on 3 July 2026. Passenger traffic also grew steadily, with the network carrying 63.81 crore passengers during the month.
Freight Performance in June
Freight earnings rose by approximately ₹430 crore, a 3 per cent increase over June 2025. Among key commodities, fertiliser loading posted the sharpest growth at 19.1 per cent, followed by balance and other goods at 17.3 per cent, iron ore at 9.4 per cent, clinker at 7.2 per cent, domestic coal at 4.9 per cent, and total coal at 3.6 per cent.
Notably, to meet heightened electricity demand during an extended summer season, Indian Railways ramped up domestic coal supply to thermal power plants by 7 per cent compared with the same month last year — underscoring the network's role as a critical link in India's energy supply chain.
Q1 FY2026-27 Cumulative Freight
The June numbers build on a strong first-quarter showing. Between April and June 2026, Indian Railways loaded 419.08 million tonnes, up from 413.05 million tonnes in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. During the quarter, iron ore loading grew 7.44 per cent, clinker rose 6.54 per cent, and balance and other goods expanded 12.16 per cent year-on-year.
Passenger Traffic Growth
On the passenger side, Indian Railways carried 63.81 crore passengers in June, up from 62.37 crore in June 2025. The non-suburban segment — covering both short and long-distance travel — grew approximately 4 per cent to 30.04 crore passengers from 28.90 crore a year earlier. The suburban segment recorded a near 1 per cent rise, with numbers climbing to 33.77 crore from 33.46 crore.
Premium Service Expansion
Indian Railways continued to scale its premium offerings during the month. The Vande Bharat fleet now operates 164 services, including the newly introduced Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Howrah and Kamakhya. The Amrit Bharat network has reached 72 services after four new additions in June, further widening affordable long-distance rail connectivity across the country.
With freight momentum sustained through the first quarter and passenger volumes trending upward, the performance sets a constructive baseline for the remainder of FY2026-27.
