Srinagar, January 29 (NationPress) Following a night of persistent cloud cover, the minimum temperature in Srinagar city exceeded the freezing point on Wednesday, as the MET office anticipated another round of rain and snow throughout Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

This season, Kashmir has not experienced the usual levels of rain and snow.

Heavy snowfall during the winter months is crucial as it replenishes the perennial water reserves in the surrounding mountains. These vital snow reserves support various rivers, streams, springs, and ponds during the summer.

A shortage of snowfall in winter leads to reduced water levels in rivers, streams, springs, wells, and ponds throughout the summer.

According to a statement from the MET department on Wednesday, “Generally dry weather is expected until the afternoon of January 29, with a chance of light snow in isolated higher areas tonight.

“A new wave of light rain and snow is anticipated at scattered to fairly widespread locations during the night of January 29 and the morning of January 30, with isolated occurrences on January 31.

“From February 1 to 2, the sky will be generally cloudy, with a possibility of light rain and snow at scattered to fairly widespread locations.

“Some middle and higher elevations may experience moderate snowfall. February 3 will also witness a generally cloudy sky with a chance of light snow at scattered places.

“On February 4 and 5, the weather will remain cloudy with potential light rain and snow in scattered to fairly widespread areas.”

The MET department also released an advisory on Wednesday, indicating a “rise in minimum temperature by 2-4 degrees Celsius at various locations starting January 29. Tourists, travelers, and transporters are advised to adhere to administrative and traffic advisories.”

Today’s minimum temperatures were recorded as follows: Srinagar at 1.9 degrees Celsius, Gulmarg at -2.5 degrees Celsius, and Pahalgam at -0.8 degrees Celsius.

Jammu city registered a minimum of 11.2 degrees Celsius, Katra at 10.3, Batote at 7.7, Banihal at 3.3, and Bhaderwah at 4.5 degrees Celsius.

The 40-day period of severe winter, known as ‘Chillai Kalan’, commenced on December 21 and will conclude on January 30.

Health professionals have advised that children and the elderly limit their exposure to extreme cold, as prolonged exposure can constrict blood vessels.

This constriction may lead to myocardial infarction, a significant cause of heart attacks and heart failures.
