Expect Rainfall in Southern Tamil Nadu and Western Ghats Until March 1, Says IMD
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, February 24 (NationPress) - The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted moderate rainfall across parts of southern Tamil Nadu and the Western Ghats region until March 1, due to the emergence of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
An official statement from the weather department indicates that a low-pressure area materialized over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent central regions on the morning of February 23. This system is anticipated to weaken as it progresses in a northeasterly direction.
Additionally, a cyclonic circulation present over the southeast Arabian Sea near the south Kerala coast is likely to affect weather conditions in nearby areas. As a result of these systems, moderate rain is projected at one or two locations within southern Tamil Nadu, the Western Ghats districts, and neighboring regions from February 24 to March 1.
The department has also provided rainfall data from the last 24 hours, noting that the highest precipitation in Tamil Nadu was recorded at Sankarankovil in the Tenkasi district, which saw 40 mm of rain. Other areas with considerable rainfall include Perunchani Dam in Kanniyakumari district, Sivalogam, Kuzhithurai, Surulacode, and Puthen Dam, each receiving 30 mm of rain.
Locations that reported 20 mm of rainfall include Kayathar in the Thoothukudi district, Palamore in Kanniyakumari, as well as Tirupathisaram, Chittar, Sivagiri in Thoothukudi, Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi town, and various parts of Madurai district.
Fishermen are advised to remain cautious as squally weather conditions are likely over the northern segments of the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjacent southwest, central, and east-central Bay of Bengal. Wind speeds in these regions could reach up to 60 kmph, according to the weather office.
Authorities are urging fishermen to refrain from venturing into the affected sea areas during this period due to expected rough conditions.
The weather department will continue to monitor these systems closely and provide updates as necessary.
With rain forecasted in the upcoming days, residents in southern districts are encouraged to remain vigilant and heed official advisories.
