Jaipur, July 1 (NationPress) Rajasthan has experienced a remarkable 128% increase in rainfall above the average during June of this year's monsoon season, as reported by officials from the weather department.
The Meteorological Department has noted that the heavy rains have replenished ponds and reservoirs throughout the state much earlier than expected. Eastern Rajasthan has seen particularly high rainfall levels, with a striking 160% above the norm, while western Rajasthan recorded an increase of 79%.
This surge in rainfall has led to strong flows in rivers and seasonal streams, with many dams registering significant water level rises. In the Kota division, numerous smaller dams are already at full capacity, and major reservoirs such as Bisalpur, Parvati, and Mahi Bajaj Sagar have also received substantial inflows.
The Water Resources Department indicates that Rajasthan's dams currently hold 50.45% of their overall storage capacity, a notable rise from 32.53% on this same date last year.
In an impressive turn of events, 90 previously dry dams have begun to fill with water. Dams in the Jaipur division are currently at 37.05% capacity. Historical trends show that over the last decade, eastern Rajasthan has consistently outperformed the west in terms of monsoon rainfall.
The state's average annual rainfall is recorded at 421.96 mm. Data reveals that the highest rainfall in the past decade was 747.24 mm in 2019, while the lowest was 506.28 mm in 2015. In 2024, a total of 662.87 mm was documented. Additionally, the Jaipur Meteorological Centre has warned of a low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent West Bengal, which is likely to affect Rajasthan's weather in the upcoming week.
This weather system is anticipated to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to over 27 districts, providing much-needed relief from the heat and humidity. Authorities have advised caution in regions expected to experience heavy rain, including Dausa, Dholpur, Karauli, and Sawai Madhopur. Rainfall is also predicted to intensify in Ajmer, Alwar, Jaipur, Kota, Bharatpur, and Udaipur.
