Uttar Pradesh Minister and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief O.P. Rajbhar on Saturday, 22 August launched a sharp attack on Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav over his recent 'chavanni' remark, accusing him of insulting the Jat community and warning that Yadav would face political consequences for his statements. The remarks have triggered a fresh round of political sparring in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The 'Chavanni' Remark That Started It All

The controversy stems from a recent public address in which Yadav appeared to take a veiled dig at Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Jayant Chaudhary and his political trajectory. Yadav said, 'Jaane kahan-kahan se aa gaye the log gathbandhan banane. Humne chavanni ka rupya bana diya tha, tab bhi humein chhod kar chale gaye wo,' suggesting that the SP had elevated several leaders' political standing — only for them to walk away from the alliance.

The remark was widely interpreted as a reference to Chaudhary's decision to exit his alliance with the SP and later align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). A chavanni, or 25-paise coin, is a colloquial expression for something of negligible worth.

Rajbhar's Broadside Against Yadav

Rajbhar said Yadav appeared to have lost his political balance and was making statements without considering their implications. He backed Chaudhary's criticism of the SP chief, endorsing the allegation that Yadav had insulted the Jat community through his comments.

'Certainly, he has insulted the Jat community. The Jat community made Mulayam Singh ji the Chief Minister, and today he is making remarks against the same Jat community. He should read his father's history,' Rajbhar said.

Chaudhary Charan Singh Invoked

Rajbhar went further, invoking the political legacy of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh — a towering figure for the Jat community — to sharpen his attack. He argued that it was Charan Singh who played a pivotal role in establishing Mulayam Singh Yadav as a prominent political leader.

'If anyone worked to make his father a leader, it was Chaudhary Charan Singh, and he is now pointing fingers at him and that very community. He will have to face the consequences,' Rajbhar said. He also accused the SP chief of speaking without understanding the target or implications of his words, adding, 'He himself does not understand what he is saying to whom and when.'

Political Significance

This comes amid a broader realignment of caste coalitions in Uttar Pradesh, where the Jat vote has historically been a swing factor. Chaudhary's RLD, which commands significant influence among Jat voters in western UP, broke from the SP-led INDIA bloc ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and allied with the NDA. Yadav's remark, whether intended as a jibe or not, risks further alienating a community the SP would need to win back in future contests.

With Rajbhar — himself a key OBC voice in the NDA's UP coalition — amplifying the criticism, the episode underscores how quickly an off-the-cuff remark can be weaponised in the state's politically charged environment. How Yadav responds will be closely watched.
