Rajkot SOG seizes 204.9 kg ganja worth ₹1.02 crore, two arrested near Bamanbor
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Special Operations Group (SOG) of Rajkot City Police seized 204.9 kg of ganja valued at ₹1.02 crore from a truck intercepted near Bamanbor on the Ahmedabad-Rajkot highway on 17 August 2024, arresting two men in the process. The operation was part of a targeted anti-narcotics drive ahead of the Janmashtami festival, officials said on Tuesday.
How the Operation Unfolded
Acting on intelligence received on 17 August that three individuals would be transporting a ganja consignment through the highway, SOG teams — with technical support from the DCB police station — were deployed near Bamanbor. Officers kept watch at the location and intercepted the truck as it passed through.
Two men were taken into custody at the scene: Mohammad alias Kalo Sarvadi, 26, a resident of Wada Ahir in Rajkot district, and Arbaaz Sandhi, 27, a driver residing in the Bapa Sitaram Chowk area of Rajkot. Legal proceedings were initiated against them at Rajkot Airport Police Station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The Alleged Supply Chain
According to the SOG, the alleged mastermind behind the operation is Rameez alias Mayo Rajakbhai, a resident of Lodhwar in Rajkot, who reportedly agreed to pay the two arrested men ₹20,000 per trip to ferry the contraband. The ganja was allegedly arranged in Odisha by a second absconding accused, Amit alias Gurkho, a resident of Hadala near Momai Hotel on Morbi Road in Rajkot, who sent the consignment back to Rajkot with the two men, police said.
This points to an inter-state supply network, with Odisha serving as the source and Gujarat as the destination — a route that law enforcement agencies have flagged in earlier seizures as well.
What Was Seized
The seized contraband weighed precisely 204.900 kg and was officially valued at ₹1,02,45,000. In addition to the narcotics, police seized three mobile phones, the truck, steel pipes, e-way bills, and related documents. The total value of all seized property was placed at ₹1,55,73,730, according to officials.
Two Accused Still at Large
Rameez and Amit, both named in the case, remain at large. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest them, officials said. Senior officials of the Rajkot City Police supervised the operation. The case has been formally registered following the seizure.
The crackdown is part of a broader Gujarat Police push against narcotics trafficking in the run-up to major festivals, when enforcement agencies typically intensify surveillance on highways and transit routes.
