Bengaluru, April 26 (NationPress) Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated on Saturday that he has not yet received the report concerning the misuse of police department protocol by the incarcerated actress Ranya Rao in relation to the gold smuggling case.
Ranya Rao, currently held at Bengaluru Central Prison, is the stepdaughter of Director General of Police (DGP) K. Ramachandra Rao.
It is claimed that Ranya Rao received a police escort from the checkpoint to her home upon her return from overseas, particularly from Dubai.
A special team, led by a senior IAS officer, was established by the state government in March to investigate the involvement of DGP Ramachandra Rao. The report regarding this matter has already been submitted to the government.
When questioned about potential action against the protocol officer who provided an escort to Ranya Rao, Minister Parameshwara mentioned that he has not received the report yet.
He further stated that the report has been sent to Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh and that authorities will act based on its findings.
The Karnataka High Court dismissed the bail plea of actress Ranya Rao concerning the gold smuggling case on Saturday.
The bail application for the second accused, Tarun Raju, was also rejected.
A bench led by Justice Savanur Vishwajith Shetty issued the ruling.
Meanwhile, the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (COFEPOSA) has been invoked against Rao.
Due to the application of the COFEPOSA Act, Rao will be ineligible for bail for one year.
Other accused individuals, Tarun Raju and Sahil Sakaria Jain, are also charged under the COFEPOSA Act.
Ranya Rao, stepdaughter of senior IPS officer Ramchandra Rao, was arrested on March 3 for allegedly smuggling 14.2 kg of gold, estimated to be worth over Rs 12.56 crore.
The investigation is being conducted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), the Enforcement Directorate, and the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Investigations revealed that with Jain's assistance, Ranya Rao disposed of 49.6 kg of gold and transferred Rs 38.4 crore of hawala money to Dubai.
The DRI stated, "Investigations have shown that Jain, originally from Ballari and now living in Bengaluru, aided and abetted Ranya Rao in disposing of 49.6 kg of gold, valued at around Rs 40 crore, and transferring hawala money of Rs 38.4 crore to Dubai."
The Karnataka government has placed jailed actress Ranya Rao's father, DGP K. Ramachandra Rao, on compulsory leave immediately and until further notice concerning the gold smuggling case.
DGP Rao was serving as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd.
The Karnataka government ordered an inquiry against jailed actress Ranya Rao's father, DGP K. Ramachandra Rao, in connection with the gold smuggling case on March 11.
The state government requested a report within one week.
