Did Reliance Industries Really Face a $30 Billion Claim from the Government?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Dec 29 (NationPress) - On Monday, Reliance Industries vehemently denied a media report claiming a $30 billion demand from the Indian government against the company and BP. In their official statement, Reliance clarified that the report titled “India claims $30 billion from Reliance Industries, BP for underproduction from gas field, sources say” is factually incorrect. They criticized the publication for relying on unnamed sources, labeling it as irresponsible.
Reliance emphasized that there is no claim of $30 billion against them or BP. Instead, the Government of India has made a claim concerning the KG D6 Block amounting to approximately $247 million, which has been clearly disclosed in the Company’s annual audited financial statements per the required regulations.
The company pointed out that the matters discussed in the report are currently under judicial review and will be resolved through the country's legal system, where Reliance holds full confidence.
“Reliance Industries Limited, alongside its partner BP, has consistently met its contractual and legal requirements and strongly disputes the misrepresentation of facts found in the report,” they added.
In 2020, BP and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) announced the launch of their new joint venture in Indian fuels and mobility, Reliance bp Mobility Limited (RBML). Following preliminary agreements in 2019, the teams have collaborated closely to finalize the transaction in a challenging landscape.
Operating under the “Jio-bp” brand, this joint venture aims to emerge as a dominant force in India’s fuels and mobility sector. BP brings a wealth of global experience in high-quality fuels, lubricants, and advanced low-carbon mobility solutions, as previously stated by BP.
