Revolutionizing Agriculture: Polyhouse Farming in Samba, J&K

Samba, Dec 6 (NationPress) Polyhouse farming has emerged as a transformative solution for farmers in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), greatly enhancing their economic well-being. The transition from traditional agricultural practices to polyhouse farming, which is being actively promoted by the Agriculture Department, has resulted in improved crop yields and elevated income levels for local farmers.

This innovative farming technique involves cultivating crops in a controlled environment, typically enclosed by plastic sheets, which shield the plants from unfavorable weather conditions.

Farmers can now grow crops throughout the year, ensuring steady production and favorable market prices.

Arjun Singh, a farmer from Swankha village in the border tehsil of Ramgarh, shared his inspiring journey. Since he embraced polyhouse farming, Singh has been able to cultivate vegetables and flowers year-round, selling them at premium prices. His financial situation has significantly improved thanks to this modern agricultural approach.

To foster this transition, the Agriculture Department has extended a generous 95 percent subsidy for the construction of polyhouses. Furthermore, they provide technical assistance and training to help farmers maximize the benefits of this innovative farming technique.

Motivated by success stories such as Singh’s, a growing number of farmers in the district are now keen to adopt polyhouse farming.

The advantages extend beyond mere increases in crop yields; they also encompass better market prices, thereby enhancing the economic outlook for farmers. As more individuals embrace this technology, the Agriculture Department envisions a significant transformation in the agricultural landscape of the region.

Madan Gopal, the District Agriculture Officer, highlighted the potential of polyhouse farming to revolutionize agriculture in the district.

"Our goal is to transform farmers into agri-entrepreneurs. With polyhouse farming, it is possible to achieve high yields in limited spaces, such as over 40 quintals of cucumber. We encourage everyone to leverage this scheme, as it has the potential to create job providers rather than job seekers," he stated.

With its increasing acceptance, polyhouse farming is set to bring about enduring positive changes to Samba’s agricultural economy.
