Kolkata, Oct 30 (NationPress) In the tragic and perplexing demise of the 11-year-old niece of Sanjoy Roy, who is currently incarcerated in the R. G. Kar case, authorities have initiated a murder investigation against his sister and brother-in-law, as confirmed by the police on Thursday.
Sources from the police indicate that the grandmother of the deceased minor, Pratima Singh, residing in Vidyasagar Colony in the Alipore area of south Kolkata, is devastated by her granddaughter's premature passing.
She has lodged a complaint against her son, Bhola Singh, and daughter-in-law, Pooja Singh, at the Alipore police station concerning the murder of her granddaughter.
Additionally, several local residents from Vidyasagar Colony on D.L. Khan Road have also submitted written grievances against Bhola and Pooja regarding the murder.
A police spokesperson stated that since the allegations involve murder, appropriate legal actions have been initiated against Bhola and Pooja Singh.
“The investigation is being conducted with utmost seriousness as we explore all potential angles,” remarked a senior Kolkata Police officer.
According to reports, Sanjoy Roy's niece was discovered hanging inside a cupboard in Vidyasagar Colony on October 19.
She was promptly transported to SSKM Hospital for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries on October 20.
Sources mentioned that no one was present at the residence during the time of the incident.
Authorities have learned that the deceased's mother, who was also Sanjoy Roy's sister, had taken her own life a few years earlier. Following this tragic event, Roy's father remarried, and Pooja was wed to Bhola Singh.
Pooja had stepped out to purchase firecrackers on the evening the incident occurred.
Local residents informed police that domestic disputes were common in Bhola's household.
Meanwhile, the initial post-mortem report of the 11-year-old suggested she died by suicide.
The autopsy findings indicated suicide, supported by evidence such as marks on her neck. However, neighbors have alleged that the father and stepmother were involved in the minor's death.
Pratima Singh claimed that her granddaughter frequently visited her in secret, expressing fears of abuse from her father and stepmother.
She accused Pooja of physically punishing her stepdaughter, stating that even before the festivals of Kali Puja and Diwali, the father had struck the minor with a belt.
Both the grandmother and the neighbors are asserting that the girl suffered as a result of her father and stepmother's cruelty.
In light of her complaint, the police have registered a case, although no arrests have been made thus far.
