New Delhi, July 8 (NationPress) Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju's statement that "minorities receive more backing and funding than Hindus" has ignited a political uproar, eliciting strong responses from both leaders of the ruling BJP and the opposition.
In defense of Rijiju's comments, senior BJP figure and former Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi praised the government's commitment to minority welfare.
“Over the past 11 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration has fostered an environment free from communal polarization, promoting inclusive empowerment. Significant efforts have been made to enhance the lives of the needy and those at the bottom of the societal ladder,” he stated.
BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar echoed similar thoughts, asserting that the nation is now safer compared to the era under the UPA.
“The country is undeniably secure. We have 1.4 billion Indians living in safety. During the UPA's tenure, bomb blasts occurred every couple of months. However, it has been 11 years without such incidents. The most significant internal security threat, Naxalism, is on the brink of being eradicated. Minorities, majorities, and all citizens are safe. This is the reality on the ground,” he remarked.
Conversely, opposition leaders have sharply criticized Rijiju's claims. Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi labeled the statement as divisive and misleading.
“Minorities encompass various religions. Singling out Muslims only weakens them. We must avoid dividing the nation. The Constitution guarantees equality for all, and Muslims are indeed facing challenges. These leaders speak against Muslims solely to garner votes,” he argued.
NCP MLA Rohit Pawar directly challenged the BJP's history.
“The Minister who made this statement must be held accountable for his party members who engage in Hindu-Muslim rhetoric and incite communal tension. The BJP is practicing divisive politics based on religion,” he contended.
Previously, Kiren Rijiju had emphasized that the Modi government's 11-year period has been characterized by "unprecedented support" for minority communities.
“Minority communities currently receive more targeted assistance and funding than the majority community, the Hindus. What minorities receive, Hindus do not,” Rijiju stated.
