Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi on Saturday, 6 June returned all security personnel deployed at their official residence in Patna, escalating a political confrontation over the reported withdrawal of their Z+ security cover. The dramatic gesture, described by the RJD as a protest, has deepened a bitter standoff between the party and the ruling establishment over what the opposition calls administratively driven political targeting.

The Protest and What Triggered It

The return of security personnel came after the Bihar government reportedly curtailed the Z+ security arrangements provided to the Lalu family. The RJD characterised the reduction as deliberate and politically motivated, framing it as an attempt to intimidate opposition leaders through administrative levers rather than democratic contestation.

RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav, who was present at the family's residence, said the decision was 'both disgusting and politically motivated.' He argued that such a move was fundamentally at odds with democratic norms.

'The government has deliberately and drastically reduced the security of the Lalu family. Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav was recently hit by a vehicle. Despite that incident, the reduction in security raises questions about the intent behind this decision,' Singh Yadav said.

He further alleged that the ruling party was pursuing a strategy of marginalising opponents, noting that Rabri Devi is not only a former Chief Minister but also the current Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Council. He contended that their stature warranted robust security, not a reduction.

A Pattern of Grievances, According to RJD

The RJD framed the security row as part of a broader pattern of administrative pressure on the opposition. 'First, a controversy was created over housing, and now the issue of security has been raised. The public mandate determines the roles of both the ruling party and the opposition, and any attempt to weaken the opposition is against democratic values. They want to eliminate the opposition, to bulldoze it,' Singh Yadav said.

Notably, this is not the first time the RJD has accused the Bihar government of using administrative measures against its leadership. The party has consistently argued that such moves are designed to create political pressure ahead of electoral cycles.

The controversy arrives at a politically charged moment in Bihar.
