Mumbai, June 26 (NationPress) BJP MLA and ex-minister Babanrao Lonikar ignited a heated debate on Thursday with his remarks directed at farmers, stating, "We provided you with clothes, and we also offered your father funds for sowing crops." His comments have drawn significant backlash from the Opposition.
While addressing attendees at an event, Lonikar reportedly claimed to the farmers present, "We distribute monetary support to your mother, sister, and wife through the Ladki Bahin Yojana. We have supplied you with your clothing, footwear, and slippers."
Originating from the Marathwada region, Lonikar continued to criticize the farmers, saying, "Those five to six carts on the crushed stones… Babanrao Lonikar has compensated his mother’s salary. Prime Minister Modi granted his father Rs 6,000 for planting crops. The funds from the Ladki Bahin Yojana are in your mother’s, sister’s, and wife’s names. The garments you wear are provided by our government. The footwear on your feet comes from us, and the basket you carry is also funded by us. Yet you receive our support and choose to criticize us?"
Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC and Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Ambadas Danve, shared a video of Lonikar's statements on social media, where he was seen disparaging the farmers.
These controversial remarks were made in light of grievances expressed by growers.
It's noteworthy that numerous initiatives for farmers have been launched by both the Centre and the Maharashtra government.
Danve, who also hails from Marathwada, rebuked Lonikar by stating, "This resembles the colonial rhetoric! Such language is unacceptable in a democracy, Babanrao, because… your clothing and shoes are due to the people. Your status as an MLA is a result of the people… the diesel in your vehicle is supplied by the people… your flight tickets are also financed by the people… your leadership is supported by the people… your position in the Assembly is thanks to the people. Elections are approaching, and we will remember your remarks."
Maharashtra Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal also condemned Lonikar, stating, "This is an extremely distasteful comment. The entirety of Maharashtra is aware of how much wealth Lonikar has accumulated and how he has utilized it. Anyone who belittles the populace and farmers in this manner will face consequences. Therefore, Lonikar should issue an apology, or the BJP must expel him from the party. Otherwise, we will ensure he cannot traverse any village."
Despite numerous attempts to reach him, Lonikar was unavailable for comment.
