New Delhi, July 24 (NationPress) In a crucial move towards fostering communal harmony and trust, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat convened with over 50 notable Muslim religious leaders and scholars on Thursday at Haryana Bhawan in New Delhi.

The private meeting, which extended over three and a half hours, was organized by Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi, the Chief of the All-India Imam Organisation.

Characterizing the dialogue as a significant effort to mend the Hindu-Muslim divide, Imam Ilyasi told IANS, “Our main aim is to preserve the spirit of dialogue. We may follow diverse faiths, but we are all Indians. There should be no animosity among communities, and such avenues for communication must persist.”

The meeting included a variety of Muslim clerics, such as the Chief Imams of Gujarat and Haryana, the Grand Muftis of Uttarakhand, Jaipur, and Uttar Pradesh (Tile Wali Masjid, Lucknow), alongside representatives from Deoband Madrasa and others. On the RSS side, senior leaders including Joint General Secretary Krishna Gopal, Ram Lal, and Mohan Bhagwat were present.

Imam Ilyasi remarked that this was the first instance of such a diverse group of Muslim clergy engaging in a formal dialogue with the RSS on this scale.

“The discussion wasn’t limited to any specific issue like Gyanvapi or Hijab. It was a trust-building initiative. We addressed broader concerns – ranging from temples and mosques to imams and priests, as well as madrasas and gurukuls. The key is to ensure that dialogue continues,” he stated.

Sources revealed that national integration, social unity, and peaceful coexistence were central themes of the discussion.

The leaders recognized this milestone as the RSS approaches its centenary year while the All-India Imam Organisation marks its 50th anniversary.

Labeling it a “positive development,” Imam Ilyasi underscored that this is merely the beginning of ongoing engagement.

“Mohan Bhagwat himself affirmed that these discussions must carry on in the spirit of national unity,” he added.

This dialogue is seen as a crucial gesture, particularly in light of the increasing communal tensions and criticism from civil society, emphasizing the necessity for both communities to actively participate in maintaining peace and pluralism in India.

Point of View

I believe this dialogue is an essential step towards fostering unity in a diverse nation. The commitment from both RSS and Muslim leaders to maintain ongoing communication reflects the collective responsibility we share in ensuring peace and understanding among different faiths in India.
