Devaswom Special Government Pleader K.B. Pradeep resigned on Saturday, 13 June, after Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan sought his removal over a conflict-of-interest controversy that had embarrassed the newly formed United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala. Pradeep had been appointed to represent the Devaswom Department in the Kerala High Court — a position critics said was created specifically for him — despite his prior legal work for a company under scrutiny in the Sabarimala gold scam.

Background to the Controversy

Pradeep had previously served as counsel for Smart Creations, a Chennai-based firm linked to the alleged theft of gold from the Sabarimala temple's gold-plated structures. Investigators had placed the company under scrutiny over allegations that panels removed from the shrine were transported to its facility, where gold was reportedly separated and diverted for other purposes. The prime accused in the case, Unnikrishnan Potty, was said to have connections to the firm.

The appointment triggered immediate political backlash, with opposition parties arguing that giving a key legal post to a lawyer associated with the defence side in an ongoing scam case was a serious impropriety. Critics further alleged that the post of Special Government Pleader for the Devaswom Department had not previously existed — the department had only a Senior Government Pleader — and was created solely to accommodate Pradeep.

Pradeep's Defence and Ministerial Remarks

Before his resignation, Pradeep had appeared before the media to defend Smart Creations, contending that the company had committed no wrongdoing and lacked the technical capability to add gold over an already gold-plated surface. His public defence of the firm only deepened questions about the appropriateness of his appointment.

Devaswom Minister K. Muraleedharan's attempt to justify the appointment drew further fire. His remark that 'someone who knows the weaknesses of the accused can be useful' was seized upon by the opposition as an inadvertent admission that the government had knowingly appointed a lawyer from the accused's side to represent state interests.

Political Fallout

Former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday criticised the new administration's handling of appointments, stating that Pradeep's appointment 'explains everything' about the direction of the UDF government. The episode has added to early pressure on the Satheesan-led administration.

Notably, this is the second appointment controversy to hit the new UDF government in quick succession. Earlier, Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph's brother-in-law had stepped down from the minister's personal staff following public criticism over his appointment. The back-to-back controversies have given the opposition fresh ammunition to question the government's judgment on patronage and propriety.
