New Delhi, June 21 (NationPress) Steel is not merely a material; it serves as the foundation for national development. From infrastructure to innovation, the goal of the government is to promote 'growth with responsibility', stated Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, HD Kumaraswamy.
During his visit to the Salem Steel Plant, a unit of SAIL, the minister praised the commendable level of technological sophistication and discipline he observed.
He remarked, "This plant embodies the true essence of Make in India."
This visit aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broader vision of positioning India as a global leader in steel production, aiming for a target of 300 million tonnes (MT) by 2030, achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070, and realizing a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
During his tour, Kumaraswamy experienced the entire steel production process, observing everything from raw scrap to molten metal and finished slabs.
He visited essential operational sectors including the Scrapyard, Steel Melting Shop, Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), and Slab Caster. He also witnessed modern equipment such as the Torch Cutting Machine and the transformation of molten iron into hot rolled coils and cold rolling mill.
The EAF-based route at Salem is crucial for cleaner, sustainable steelmaking, in line with India's decarbonisation commitments.
Kumaraswamy also examined the Cold Rolling Mill, where high-quality stainless steel is manufactured for a variety of applications.
He stated, "The finished products from this plant impact millions of lives daily, from homes to industries."
These products are vital to sectors such as railways, defence, energy, infrastructure, and home utilities, making the Salem Steel Plant a pivotal component in India’s stainless steel ecosystem.
Discussions focused on addressing key challenges, considering strategic interventions, and prioritizing the increase of production in speciality steel, an essential segment for defence, railways, aerospace, and precision engineering.
"We are dedicated to rejuvenating this strategic asset. Speciality steel represents the future, and the Salem Steel Plant can enhance its cost-efficiency by utilizing renewable energy sources like solar and wind. There must be full capacity utilization and a clear decision on the final product mix," Kumaraswamy added.
