Satish Poonia, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Haryana in-charge and former Rajasthan BJP president, on Monday, 20 July took the oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha, formally entering the Upper House of Parliament. The swearing-in marks a significant milestone in Poonia's decades-long journey through student politics, youth movements, and party leadership.

A Journey from Bewad to Parliament

Speaking after taking the oath, Poonia described the occasion as one of the most memorable moments of his public life. He said his path from the semi-arid village of Bewad in Rajasthan to the Rajya Sabha was made possible through the blessings of the party leadership and the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside the steadfast support of lakhs of BJP workers.

Reflecting on his early years, Poonia recalled watching aeroplanes fly overhead as a child and dreaming of reaching great heights. He spoke of relocating from his village to a city for higher education, enduring personal tragedies — including the loss of his elder brother and later his father — and participating in nationalist movements such as the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi, Kashmir, and Bofors agitations, during which he also faced repression.

Ideology and Guiding Principles

Poonia said these formative experiences deepened his resolve and reinforced his commitment to public service. He credited the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the BJP with shaping his political identity and providing him a platform to serve society. Throughout his career in student politics, youth politics, and public life, he said he remained anchored by the principle of 'Organisation First' — a value he credited with opening doors despite numerous personal struggles.

He also expressed gratitude to his mother for her unwavering blessings, and to colleagues, party workers, friends, and family members who stood by him at every stage of his journey.

Pledge to Parliament and Public Service

As a newly sworn-in Rajya Sabha member, Poonia reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of Antyodaya and dedicated public service. He said public life is ultimately measured by the expectations society places on its representatives, and pledged to work with sincerity to fulfil those expectations.

He attributed his elevation to the Upper House to divine blessings, the confidence reposed in him by the BJP leadership, and the goodwill of countless party workers across Rajasthan and beyond.
