Itanagar, Jan 17 (NationPress) The search for a missing Kerala tourist extended into a second day on Saturday at the frozen Sela Lake located in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang district, according to officials.

A police representative in Itanagar reported that seven tourists from Kerala arrived in Tawang on Friday via Guwahati to explore the famed Sela Lake.

The body of one tourist was recovered on Friday, while another was rescued unharmed. Search efforts are ongoing to locate the third tourist, Mahadev M. (24), who is still unaccounted for, the official added.

The Indian Army, along with the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are collaboratively conducting the search operation.

Defense spokesman Lt Colonel Mahendra Rawat indicated that the Army, in conjunction with police and civil authorities, retrieved two tourists from the frozen Sela Lake on Friday, one of whom was unfortunately found deceased.

Search efforts to find the third missing tourist commenced on Friday. He stated that Sela Lake, situated at an elevation of around 13,700 feet above sea level, remains frozen during this season.

"During their visit, one tourist reportedly ventured toward the center of the frozen lake, where the ice collapsed, resulting in his submersion. Two other tourists attempted to assist but were also engulfed by the icy waters," Lt Col Rawat explained.

Upon receiving the distress signal, an Indian Army rescue unit from the Gajraj Corps was swiftly dispatched. Despite harsh weather conditions, sub-zero temperatures, and the complexities of high-altitude operations, Army divers, along with police and civil officials, undertook prompt rescue missions.

"One individual received immediate medical care and was revived, while another was found deceased. Search operations for the third missing tourist remain in progress," the defense spokesman stated.

All other tourists have been safely accommodated at Army camps nearby and are receiving essential care and support.

Reiterating its commitment to humanitarian aid, the Army urged visitors to strictly adhere to guidelines issued by civil authorities.

Meanwhile, Tawang District Superintendent of Police D.W. Thongon reiterated his plea for tourists to comply with advisories from the district administration.

"Warning signboards have been installed at Sela and Shungatser, explicitly advising tourists against entering frozen lakes. Visitors must strictly observe all advisories for their own safety," cautioned the district police chief.

Sela Lake is renowned as the most picturesque of two scenic lakes situated near the Sela mountain pass.

Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang district boasts numerous high-altitude lakes, with local lore suggesting that up to 108 lakes are scattered across the district, especially along its eastern and northern borders.
