Raipur/Bijapur, Jan 17 (NationPress) In a significant operation, two Maoists, including a prominent commander, were neutralised during a fierce encounter with security forces in the thickly wooded regions of the National Park area in Bijapur district.
As per police sources, the deceased militants are identified as Dilip Bedja, the head of the Naxalites' National Park Area Committee, alongside another cadre.
Their remains have been retrieved from the encounter site.
Initial reports indicate the potential involvement of senior Maoist leader Paparao (also known as Papa Rao) in the vicinity, with some sources suggesting he may have also been neutralised, but this remains to be officially confirmed.
Officials reported that the gunfight commenced this morning in the northwestern hilly and forested terrain of Bijapur district, prompted by specific intelligence regarding armed Maoist presence.
A joint contingent of District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel initiated a proactive search and cordon operation, leading to the confrontation.
Intermittent gunfire has persisted since early hours, with the encounter still active at multiple locations across the region. Bijapur Police officials confirmed that the operation is ongoing, surrounding the entire area with security forces.
In a statement, officials remarked, "The DRG personnel acted on credible intelligence, and the operation is still underway. The number of Naxalites neutralised may increase as combing and recovery efforts progress."
Two AK-47 rifles have already been seized from the encounter site, alongside other potential arms and ammunition. This incident signifies an early victory for Chhattisgarh's intensified anti-Naxal initiatives, which align with the central government's objective of eradicating Naxalism by March 31, 2026.
The Bastar region, which includes Bijapur, has been under sustained pressure against Maoist networks through ongoing operations, surrenders, and eliminations.
Noteworthy is the recent surrender of 52 cadres belonging to the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) to security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region this week.
This group of surrendering individuals comprised 21 women and 31 men, collectively associated with bounties totaling Rs 1.41 crore.
