Thiruvananthapuram, June 7 (NationPress) In a shocking incident, Reshma Chandrasekeran, a woman in her 30s, has been apprehended just hours before her eighth wedding. She is accused of deceiving at least seven men by marrying them and then absconding with their gold mangalasutras, as reported by officials on Saturday.
Reshma, who has a two-year-old child, was arrested by the Aryanadu Police on Friday at a beauty parlour while she was preparing for the wedding.
The soon-to-be groom, a local body member from Pothencode, grew wary of her actions and informed the police.
"She is currently in our custody. Her arrest has been officially recorded, and she will be presented in the local court shortly," stated a police official to IANS.
The groom revealed to the police that he had initially met Reshma through a matrimonial website last month.
After some discussions with a woman who acted as a mediator, Reshma was introduced as a potential bride. They later met at a mall in Kottayam, where Reshma claimed to have grown up as an orphan with very few relatives, explaining the absence of family at the wedding planned for June 6.
However, suspicions arose when she visited the groom's friend's house the night before. The friend's wife noticed her questionable behavior and alerted the groom.
On Friday, as Reshma arrived at the beauty parlour, her handbag was discreetly searched, revealing documents related to several previous marriages. The police were called immediately, leading to her detention.
According to police officials, Reshma's method was straightforward yet effective—after each wedding, where the groom would traditionally give her the mangalasutra, she would vanish within days, severing all communication.
"We have begun contacting the men she previously married based on the information gathered during questioning," the official noted, adding, "She appears to have been planning at least two more weddings in the upcoming months."
This incident has left the local community in shock, raising serious alarm over matrimonial fraud. Investigations are ongoing to fully uncover the extent of Reshma’s deceit and to identify any potential accomplices.
