Mumbai, Dec 24 (NationPress) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief leader Eknath Shinde sharply criticized the alliance between the Thackeray cousins on Wednesday, labeling it a “self-serving collaboration” born from political urgency rather than genuine concern for the populace.

He downplayed the influence of the new coalition on the Mahayuti in the upcoming BMC elections.

“In a democracy, alliances are customary, yet some are formed for the betterment of the state (referring to MahaYuti), while this one solely aims to preserve their own standing and maintain power,” Shinde remarked.

He stated, “This is not a union of hearts; it is a union for the chair.”

In response to Raj Thackeray’s comment about “political child-lifters” luring candidates, Shinde quipped, “They should first learn to nurture their own children (party workers). If you can’t manage your own house, how can you manage Maharashtra?”

Shinde asserted that his faction embodies the true legacy of Balasaheb Thackeray. He noted that the late Sena founder envisioned a “slum-free Mumbai,” a vision his administration is actively pursuing, while criticizing the Thackeray cousins for their inaction during their tenure.

He questioned why the two cousins had been apart for 20 years, effectively splitting the Marathi vote.

Shinde asked, “Why did they take the Marathi people for granted for two decades? Now that they are losing influence, they remember their responsibilities.”

Additionally, he announced plans to attract Mumbaikars who relocated to satellite cities (like Thane, Kalyan, and Vasai-Virar) due to high living costs, promising them affordable housing within the city.

Other leaders from the Shinde faction dismissed the event as merely a “photo opportunity.”

Spokesperson Manisha Kayande commented that while it is “positive to see brothers reunite,” it does not address the administrative shortcomings of prior BMC regimes led by the Shiv Sena UBT.

Point of View

The recent comments by Eknath Shinde highlight the ongoing political dynamics in Maharashtra. While alliances are a common feature in politics, the motivations behind them often warrant scrutiny. Shinde's emphasis on legacy and commitment to the people positions his faction as a serious contender in the ongoing political landscape, reflecting a broader narrative of accountability.
