Mumbai, July 17 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who oversees both the urban development and housing sectors, announced on Thursday that the state government is committed to reinstating Marathi individuals who have departed from Mumbai. This initiative aims to eliminate barriers and make the dream of homeownership in the bustling metropolis a reality for the average person.
Shinde emphasized that the measures taken by the Mahayuti government will significantly impact the lives of Mumbai's citizens, which he referred to as the country's growth engine, during a discussion in the state Assembly.
He detailed that necessary reforms within the Urban Development and Housing Department will expedite the completion of stalled redevelopment projects, contributing towards a slum-free Mumbai, as he addressed the Assembly under Rule 293.
“We are working tirelessly to connect Mumbai with the global community. We are truly transforming Mumbai. Most of the progress seen in Mumbai occurred during the Mahayuti government's tenure. These initiatives are fostering significant changes in the lives of Mumbaikars. This is the most extensive development of Mumbai since India's Independence,” he stated, countering the Opposition's criticisms.
Shinde elaborated on efforts to expedite stalled redevelopment projects, mentioning that a developer is now assigned to the cluster development initiative in Motilal Nagar Goregaon and GTP Nagar, which will provide housing for 4,900 residents.
“The bidding process for cluster development in Kamathipura Abhyudaya Nagar is currently ongoing and is expected to conclude by September 2025, benefiting approximately 11,441 tenants. Similar processes are underway for clusters in Adarsh Nagar Worli and Bandra Reclamation,” he added.
Furthermore, Dy CM Shinde indicated that the redevelopment of BDD chawls in Worli Naigaon and N.M. Joshi Marg is in progress, aiming to rehabilitate a total of 15,600 tenants.
“By August 15, we aim to allocate 556 flats in Worli, with plans to distribute 25% of all flats by December 2025. Rehabilitation efforts are also being made in the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar slum. The MMRDA is currently working on the East-opening road in this area, with 6144 slum dwellers being accommodated in the first phase,” he explained.
A new housing policy focused on affordable housing has been developed, with plans to construct 35 lakh houses through a Rs 70,000 crore investment.
“The common man will have access to the affordable and environmentally sustainable housing they deserve. Redevelopment of aging buildings in Mumbai remains a significant issue. While serving as Chief Minister, I amended the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation Act 1888 (Act 1976), allowing for the swift completion of unfinished projects. Stalled SRA schemes are being addressed through government entities, bringing the vision of Hindu Hruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray to fruition,” he remarked.
In response to the Opposition's claims regarding the disrepair of Mumbai's roads, Dy CM Shinde stated that the city’s roads are undergoing a process of concreting, with the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation addressing complaints through dedicated agencies.
The annual expenditure for filling potholes has been cut by 50% this year, and an online portal for pothole complaints has been established, alongside a partnership with IIT Mumbai for inspections.
