Karnataka's Deputy CM Accuses Centre of Political Manipulation Over Fuel Price Cut
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 27 (NationPress) D.K. Shivakumar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, sharply criticized the Central government on Friday, asserting that the recent fuel price reduction was driven by political motives.
His comments came in response to media inquiries near his Bengaluru residence concerning the Centre's choice to cut the special additional excise duty on fuel.
“The Government of India is harming us. They have lowered fuel prices merely for the elections. In contrast, Nayara company has raised fuel prices,” he stated.
When questioned about the possibility of the state government following suit with a fuel price cut, Shivakumar replied, “We'll address that later.”
Addressing concerns about potential minority vote fragmentation in the upcoming by-elections, he asserted, “There will be no division under any circumstances. Not only minorities but other communities will also stand united. Samarth Mallikarjun, our candidate for Davanagere South, will secure a larger victory than the late Shamanur Shivashankarappa, who previously held the seat.
“Samarth was like a son to him. I am confident he will win. The entire state acknowledges the contributions made by that family to Davanagere, and the people remember them,” Shivakumar emphasized.
Regarding reports of dissatisfaction and suspensions within the party ahead of the by-election, he stated, “I have not authorized any suspension orders. These are local issues. The Chief Minister and I have discussed the situation, but we will keep it confidential. Senior leaders like Zameer Ahmad Khan, Jabbar, and Nazeer will adhere to the party's guidance. There’s no doubt about that. While there may be wrestlers and strongmen, they are all part of our team. Differences are normal during elections, and we will manage them accordingly.”
On the topic of MLAs seeking IPL tickets, Shivakumar remarked, “MLAs are entitled to their requests, as they are integral to the government and the system. We have permitted matches to take place under pressure. Although I may be a member of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), that’s a separate issue. I will coordinate with the KSCA president to facilitate access for our MLAs to attend the matches.”
In response to BJP MP Tejasvi Surya's criticism regarding the necessity of such demands, Shivakumar stated, “He should offer advice to his party leaders, not us.”
