Is Family Politics Inevitable in Indian Politics? Shivakumar's Defense on Congress Bypoll Choices
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi/Bengaluru, March 24 (NationPress) In a robust defense of the Congress's choice to allocate tickets to relatives for the Karnataka bypolls, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar posed the question: which political party is free from family politics? During a media interaction at the Delhi airport and later at Karnataka Bhavan, Shivakumar addressed the criticisms surrounding favoritism towards family members by stating, "Which party can claim to be devoid of family politics? It's a common practice across all parties. In Davangere, for instance, three individuals from one family have been entrenched in politics for years."
He elaborated on the party's decision regarding Prabha Mallikarjun, saying, "We encouraged her to run for the Lok Sabha seat in Davangere, even though she initially hesitated. Given our losses in the past five to six elections, we felt it was crucial to support her candidacy for a better chance at victory. She has since won and is performing admirably in Parliament."
Shivakumar, also serving as the state Congress chief, mentioned, "The rebel candidates who have submitted nominations for the Davangere by-election are from our party. We intend to engage with them to resolve any issues."
During his visit, Shivakumar noted, "Yesterday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and I traveled to Davangere and Bagalkot. While several nominations have been filed in Davangere, they all originate from our party. Our leaders will have discussions to ensure everything is properly addressed."
When questioned about the rising discontent within the party, he responded, "It is natural for individuals to have aspirations. There is nothing inappropriate about that."
Congress is reportedly facing significant internal resistance regarding the ticket allocated to Samarth Mallikarjun for the Davanagere South seat. He is the grandson of the late Shamanur Shivashankarappa, a prominent Congress figure who previously held the seat. Given the notable minority vote presence, there have been strong demands for a candidate from that community. Samarth Mallikarjun's mother, Prabha Mallikarjun, currently represents the Davanagere Lok Sabha seat, while his father, S.S. Mallikarjun, holds the position of Minister for Mines, Geology and Horticulture.
Shivakumar concluded by stating that his visit to Delhi was for a conference organized by a media entity, saying, "I was invited to discuss India's future direction, which is the purpose of my visit."
