D.K. Shivakumar set to be Karnataka CM as Siddaramaiah steps down
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
D.K. Shivakumar is set to become the next Chief Minister of Karnataka after senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah confirmed on Thursday, 28 May that he would resign from the top post, ending months of political uncertainty over the state's leadership arrangement. The announcement brings to a close a prolonged power-sharing dispute that had repeatedly threatened to destabilise the Congress government in Bengaluru.
End of a Prolonged Leadership Tussle
Siddaramaiah's confirmation puts to rest speculation that had dogged the Congress administration since it returned to power in Karnataka. The party had operated under an informal rotation arrangement between Siddaramaiah and his deputy Shivakumar, with the question of when — and whether — the transition would actually occur fuelling persistent internal tension. Thursday's development signals that the Congress high command has moved to resolve the deadlock decisively.
Earlier in the day, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar held a breakfast meeting at the Chief Minister's official residence 'Kaveri' in Bengaluru. The meeting drew significant attention amid heightened speculation over the impending change. Shivakumar arrived accompanied by several Cabinet ministers and senior Congress leaders considered close to Siddaramaiah — a show of unity designed to project a smooth handover.
What Congress Leaders Said
Maharashtra Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar said the transition was rooted in pre-election discussions within the party. 'Before the elections, there were some discussions, and this is all related to that. Siddaramaiah is a very senior and respected leader in our party. He will be given due respect in the party, as he has made a significant contribution and has done good work as Chief Minister,' Wadettiwar said.
He added: 'In this situation, bringing in new leadership and youth leadership while respecting senior leaders and giving them good positions and opportunities to work, is a positive step.'
Shivakumar's Supporters Celebrate
On the ground, supporters of Shivakumar responded with visible enthusiasm. Karnataka Sena Pade District President Tejesh Lokesh Gowda said prayers were offered at a temple for Shivakumar's elevation. 'We offered prayers and broke coconuts, praying for D.K. Shivakumar to become the Chief Minister. After Siddaramaiah's resignation, D.K. Shivakumar, who has served the Congress party for the last 40 years, now has the opportunity to become the Chief Minister. We prayed to Lord Ganapati for him to become a good CM,' Gowda said.
Congress worker Uma Shankar expressed confidence that the oath-taking ceremony was imminent. 'D.K. Shivakumar will surely take oath as Chief Minister, and we are going to celebrate it on a grand scale,' he said.
What Happens Next
Shivakumar is widely regarded as one of the party's most influential organisers and has been a key architect of Congress's return to power in Karnataka. His formal elevation is expected to be formalised in the coming days, pending the Congress legislature party meeting and Governor's approval. The transition will be closely watched as a test of the party's ability to manage internal succession without triggering a floor-level revolt — a challenge Congress has faced in other states.
