Bengaluru, Feb 24 (NationPress) In light of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressing his aspirations to lead the party in the upcoming Assembly elections, Karnataka's Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar emphasized that he will take charge of the party in the 2028 Assembly elections, irrespective of his position.
Shivakumar's remarks gain significance as certain party members have requested a change in leadership, proposing to replace him as the state party chief.
During a press conference at the party office in Bengaluru, he was asked if he would lead the 2028 elections, to which he confidently stated, "No matter what position I hold at that time, it is my duty to lead the party."
"Leadership is not defined by titles. It is the commitment, vision, and leadership that propel a party forward. My role is secondary; what is essential is to reinforce and guide the party as a devoted Congressman with the authority granted to me," he added.
Shivakumar also mentioned his trip to Delhi, saying, "I am set to meet the Union Minister for Jal Shakti. During my last trip to Rajasthan, I raised concerns about our irrigation projects, and the minister has allocated time for a meeting tomorrow."
"It is crucial for the files to be handled by Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti V. Somanna, who hails from our state. I have also reached out to Somanna. The meeting is planned between 11 am and 12 noon."
"Our officials have already traveled to Delhi for preliminary discussions. If time allows after the meeting and if our leaders are available, I will also meet with them. The AICC office holds great importance for us, so I plan to visit there too. The following morning, I have been invited to an event hosted by Sadhguru at the Isha Foundation, which I will attend," he remarked.
When questioned about rumors suggesting that citizens may be asked to clear outstanding Gruha Jyoti scheme bills, Shivakumar replied, "I am not aware of this. I will provide a response once I have the details."
Regarding the incident involving a bus conductor assaulted by Marathi protesters in Belagavi, he stated, "The Home Minister and the Transport Minister are addressing this issue. They have traveled to Belagavi to evaluate the situation. After their assessment, we will deliberate on the matter. Our state is known for its peace-loving nature, and we aspire to coexist harmoniously with everyone."
In response to allegations made by BJP MLA N. Muniratna concerning a Rs 2,000 crore scam, Shivakumar remarked, "It's up to former CM B.S. Yediyurappa and Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka to respond regarding the cases filed against Muniratna. I will provide my comments after that."
When asked about political strategist Sunil Kanugolu's input, Shivakumar stated, "National-level decisions are made accordingly. He serves as the Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, and we will evaluate and decide on his suggestions for the party's advantage. If beneficial advice is given for the party, we will certainly consider it."
Shivakumar revealed that internal assessments suggest Congress has a good chance of reclaiming approximately 60 previously lost constituencies in the upcoming Assembly elections.
He added, "We have instructed our defeated candidates to gear up for the 2028 elections."
A meeting was held with the candidates who lost.
"We engaged with candidates from 86 constituencies where we did not succeed, listened to their challenges, and strategized for the next elections, including local body elections. They must remain proactive and work diligently. We will collaborate with the AICC to formulate a strategy aimed at strengthening the party in the remaining 20 weaker constituencies," Shivakumar explained.
Shivakumar also announced a separate gathering with both victorious and defeated Lok Sabha candidates, saying, "Those who faced defeat in the elections have been actively involved in the Lok Sabha and cooperative society elections. They have been provided with guidance and encouragement. Prior to the next legislative session, the Chief Minister and I will convene a meeting with them and finalize a date."
