Shimla, June 9 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Sukhu, visited the Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project located in Kinnaur district on Monday to review the current progress of the project. He confirmed that the project is expected to be completed by November 2026.
During his visit, Chief Minister Sukhu examined the powerhouse situated in Karcham and toured the barrage site at Powari, where he engaged with the engineers and laborers involved in the project.
Chief Minister Sukhu has instructed that this 450 MW hydroelectric project be finalized promptly by November 2026. Upon its completion, it is projected that Himachal Pradesh will generate an annual revenue of approximately Rs 1,000 crore.
He mentioned that the construction of the Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project has been ongoing for the past 13 years; however, his administration has expedited its development, ensuring that the project will be inaugurated on schedule.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the government is committed to optimizing the use of river water resources to bolster the economy of Himachal.
Chief Minister Sukhu also highlighted the government's plans to take control of the Dhaulasidh, Luhri, and Sunni hydropower projects, with an evaluation of the total expenditure on these initiatives currently underway.
He stated that moving forward, the Himachal government will manage the construction of hydropower projects according to its own terms to safeguard the interests of the state, which he claims were neglected by the former BJP government.
Additionally, Chief Minister Sukhu indicated that the government is advancing towards establishing a geo-thermal power project in Tapri, Kinnaur district, and is also focusing on the production of solar and green hydrogen energy.
He pointed out that despite being an energy surplus state, the government is compelled to purchase electricity during the winter months, specifically from October to March, at costs ranging from Rs 5 to Rs 6 per unit from neighboring states. To mitigate this, efforts are being made to enhance solar energy production during this period to reduce dependency on external electricity sources.
Approximately 626 MW of solar projects are currently at various stages of development through HPPCL.
