Kochi, July 31 (NationPress) As the deadline for withdrawing nominations for the 17-member executive committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) has now passed, actress Shwetha Menon and Kuku Parameswaran are set to compete for top positions in the upcoming elections scheduled for August 15.
Shwetha is vying for the President’s role against actor-turned-BJP politician Devan, while Kuku faces off against villain Ravindran for the General Secretary position.
On the last day of nominations, there was considerable activity, and a moment of optimism emerged when Jagdeesh and three others withdrew their nominations in support of Shwetha. However, Devan expressed that he preferred she win through votes rather than by default.
The Treasurer’s position is also highly contested, with Anoop Chandran competing against Unni Sivapal.
Furthermore, for the two Vice-President roles, there are four candidates in contention.
On a positive note, Anseeba Hassan was elected unanimously as the Joint Secretary.
Interestingly, the unexpected withdrawal of actor Baburaj from the General Secretary race raised eyebrows, as he had previously claimed he would not step down. He shared on social media that the negative feedback he received after putting in eight years of hard work in AMMA compelled him to withdraw his nomination and step back from all AMMA activities.
"I wish AMMA all the best," stated Baburaj.
AMMA’s structure includes the President, two Vice-Presidents, General Secretary, Joint Secretary, Treasurer, and 11 executive members.
About 500 AMMA members are eligible to cast their votes.
The significant question remains: will female actresses secure the top two positions in AMMA, a feat never achieved before?
The current office bearers, led by President Mohanlal, resigned last year following the Justice K. Hema Committee report on the status of women in the Malayalam film industry. After Siddique resigned due to sexual assault allegations, more individuals were scrutinized, prompting Mohanlal to resign and initiate a new election process.
