Kochi, Aug 15 (NationPress) In a significant development for the Malayalam film fraternity, renowned actresses Shwetha Menon and Kukku Parameswaran have been appointed as president and general secretary, respectively, of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). This is the first occasion in the organization’s 30-year history that women have ascended to its two highest roles, previously dominated by men.
Historically, female members had only occupied subordinate roles such as vice-president, joint secretary, or committee member.
Menon triumphed over actor-turned-BJP leader Devan in a fiercely contested election, receiving 159 votes compared to his 132. Parameswaran achieved a more substantial victory, amassing 172 votes against rival Raveendran’s 115.
The newly appointed office bearers also include Jayan Cherthalla and Laxmi Priya as vice-presidents, Unni Shivapal as treasurer, and Anzeeba Hassan as joint secretary (unopposed).
Committee members elected are Sharayu, Anjali Nair, Asha Aravind, Sajitha, Neena Kurup, Joy Mathew, Kailas, Nandu, Dr Ronnie, Sijoy, Vinu, Tiny Tom, and Santhosh.
In an extraordinary show of solidarity, despite his defeat, Devan administered the oath to the newly elected officials, stating, “AMMA’s mother is Shwetha, and I am the father. I am incredibly happy for Shwetha, and we should all support the new team.”
Expressing her thanks and sharing her vision, Menon remarked, “With the elections concluded, all AMMA members will unite. If needed, I will personally connect with members who have been distant. Our initial meeting will be convened soon to discuss all outstanding matters.”
Out of AMMA’s over 500 members, 298 cast their votes. The lead-up to the elections was not without drama.
Veteran actor Jagadish initially submitted his nomination for president but withdrew upon discovering Menon’s interest, paving the way for her candidacy.
Shortly thereafter, Devan entered the race, emphasizing that a woman should contest for the benefit of the organization, resulting in one of the most pivotal leadership transformations in AMMA’s history.
The victories of Menon and Parameswaran are viewed as both a symbolic and practical step towards enhanced gender inclusivity within Malayalam cinema’s most prominent artists’ organization, according to State Minister for Films, Saji Cherian.
