Kochi, Aug 6 (NationPress) The police in Kerala's Kochi have initiated legal action against renowned Malayalam actress Shwetha Menon, following a complaint alleging that she participated in obscene content and profited from it. The complaint was lodged by social activist Martin Menachery, leading to the case being registered under Section 67(A) of the IT Act and provisions of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
The complaint references scenes from several films featuring Menon, including "Paleri Manikyam", "Rathinirvedam", and "Kalimannu"—the latter directed by Blessy, which included actual footage of her giving birth.
Additionally, a condom advertisement featuring Menon has been cited among the allegedly inappropriate materials.
Despite the serious nature of these allegations, all works mentioned were previously certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and made available to the public through mainstream channels.
Many of these films remain accessible online.
The complaint claims that clips from these films are being widely shared across social media and adult websites, which the petitioner argues constitutes indecent representation and exploitation of digital platforms.
Initially, the police did not act on the complaint, but after Menachery sought intervention from the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate's court, the court directed the police to proceed with the case.
Following the court's order, the Kochi Central police filed an FIR against Menon. A senior police official confirmed that they must adhere to judicial directives and stated, "Now we will investigate the complaint."
The FIR notes that nude or semi-nude scenes involving the actress are circulating online, which contributed to the case registration.
This incident arises at a time when Menon is vying for the prestigious role of President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA). She faces off against popular actor and BJP leader Devan.
At one stage, it seemed she might be elected unopposed after four male candidates withdrew; however, Devan emphasized the importance of winning through democratic means, indicating that if Menon succeeds, it will be a notable achievement, but if not, it would be seen as a commendable gesture.
