Tripura earns 'Leader' tag in Startup India Ranking: IT Minister
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tripura has been recognised as a 'Leader' in the Start-up India Ranking, Information and Technology Minister Pranajit Singha Roy announced on Monday, 17 August, marking a significant milestone for the northeastern state's growing entrepreneurial ecosystem. The minister made the declaration at the inauguration of a workshop titled 'Building a Unicorn in Tripura', held at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala.
Current State of Tripura's Start-up Ecosystem
Tripura currently hosts 80 functional start-ups and eight incubators, according to the minister. According to Start-up India data, the number of women-led start-ups in the state has risen remarkably in recent years — a trend officials highlighted as one of the ecosystem's most encouraging indicators. The state launched its Start-up Ecosystem Plan and Start-up Scheme in 2019, with the twin objectives of supporting IT-based enterprises and generating employment.
What the Workshop Aims to Achieve
The 'Building a Unicorn in Tripura' workshop is designed to do more than take stock of existing progress. Minister Singha Roy said the event seeks to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among young people, helping them scale start-ups into large, job-creating businesses and positioning Tripura as a meaningful contributor to India's national start-up story. He emphasised that start-ups must be viewed not merely as commercial ventures but as a 'significant driving force' for the state's economy and employment generation.
State Innovation Mission and New MoUs
A key institutional development flagged at the event was the State Innovation Mission, launched in Agartala in February 2026. The mission is designed to bridge the gap between innovative ideas and market-ready businesses by bringing together technology and entrepreneurship. Separately, the IT Department signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with a private bank and other organisations at the event to extend financial and technical assistance to small start-ups. The agreements are expected to improve access to capital and support for early-stage entrepreneurs, according to an IT Department official.
Broader National Context
Minister Singha Roy situated Tripura's push within India's larger start-up ambitions, noting that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has emerged as one of the world's largest start-up ecosystems. Tripura, he said, is working to become an integral part of that journey. This comes amid a broader Centre-driven effort to bring tier-2 and tier-3 cities — and smaller states — into the mainstream of India's innovation economy, an objective that the Start-up India ranking framework is partly designed to incentivise. Other speakers at the workshop included Kiran Gitte, Secretary to the Chief Minister, and Prashant Kumar Goyal, Secretary of the IT Department. With fresh MoUs signed and the State Innovation Mission now operational, the next phase will test whether Tripura can convert its 'Leader' ranking into measurable job creation and scalable ventures.
